AI SEO tools: choose by the work you need done
The quick answer
AI SEO tools can help you read your search data, group keywords, improve drafts and check your website for faults. Pick one job first and use data you can verify. Start with your own search records, check each suggestion and review every change before it goes on your website.

Key takeaways
- Pick an AI SEO tool for one job at a time: search data, page planning, content editing or site checks.
- Google Search Console is Google’s own record of how your site performs on Google, so start there before paying for anything.
- A content score or recommendation is the vendor’s own measure and not proof of a Google ranking.
- Google says generative AI can help with research and structure and warns that many pages with no added value for users may break its spam policy.
- Tools that track whether AI answers mention you are a separate category, covered in our AI visibility tools guide.
SEO, short for search engine optimisation, is the work of making your business easy to find on Google. An AI SEO tool is software that does one part of that work faster. It might read your search data, plan pages, improve a draft or check your website for faults. Pick the job first and the tool second.
Say you run a plumbing business in the Inner West and your inbox keeps filling with offers for AI SEO tools. Each one does a different job. A tool that plans pages from a list of keywords, which are the words and phrases people type into Google, is not the one that checks your website for faults. So the first question is which job you need done.
We’re an AI SEO agency, not a software reseller. This guide matches tools to jobs, shows what the vendors say they cost and sets out how to test one before you pay. We haven’t benchmarked any of these products, so the details come from each vendor’s own pages as at 19 October 2026 and from Google’s documentation.
Where should you start with AI SEO tools?
Start with your own search data by following these three steps.
- Open Search Console and find three searches where you show up but get few clicks. Search Console is Google’s own record of how your site performs on Google.
- Pick one job from the table in the next section.
- Run a pilot of one tool on one page before you subscribe. A pilot is a small test run. The section near the end shows how to do one.
Which AI SEO tools fit the work you need done?
Match the tool to one job, give it data you can verify and check what it returns. The picture below shows the four jobs one under the other. Each one has an example tool and a human check. The check is what makes the tool’s output usable.

AI visibility tracking is a separate job.
The table lists the jobs, an example tool for each, what you feed it and the human check that must follow.
Scroll across to read every column
| Job | Example tool | You give it | It gives back | Human check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Understand your search data | Google Search Console | Your verified site | Queries, pages, clicks and impressions (times your pages were shown) | Compare periods of equal length |
| Group keywords into pages | Semrush Keyword Strategy Builder | A keyword list | Broad topic pages and supporting pages | Does each page match the searcher’s intent? |
| Improve an existing draft | Ahrefs AI Content Helper, Surfer Content Editor | Your draft and a target keyword | Topic gaps, outline and edit suggestions | Is every fact true and every claim yours? |
| Check your website | Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Your site’s page addresses | Collected page details and possible issues | Test any fix before it goes live |
There is one more job that this table leaves out. It is finding out whether ChatGPT or Google’s AI answers mention your business. The tools for that are a different kind. Our guide to AI visibility tools compares them. The wider work of getting AI answers to describe your business well and cite it as a source is called generative engine optimisation (GEO). Our guide on what is GEO explains it.
Do you need an AI tool at all?
Not to start, because your own search data already records real searches for your site. If you haven’t used it, begin there and add a paid tool only when a specific job justifies the cost.
AI also changes less than the sales pages suggest. The aim of SEO is still pages that answer real customer questions with real evidence. Our guide to AI SEO explains how that connects to ChatGPT and Google AI answers. The tools below help you do that work faster. They don’t replace it.
Which tools can help you read your search data?
Google Search Console is the first stop. Google describes it as a tool that helps anyone with a website see how it is performing on Google Search.1 Its Performance report splits your traffic by query (the words people typed), page and country.1
Use the same routine each month and record how long the review takes:
- Export the queries and pages for the last 28 days and the 28 days before.
- Sort by impressions (the number of times your page appeared in results) and look for searches where you show up but get few clicks.
- Ask an AI assistant to group the queries by what the person wants, such as “price”, “near me” or “how to”.
- Check each group against the original export before you act on it.
Step 4 matters because an assistant can invent a pattern or a number. Only the export is the record of your own searches. Keep customer names, emails and phone numbers out of anything you paste into a tool.
Which tools can turn keywords into page plans?
Semrush’s Keyword Strategy Builder takes a list of up to 10,000 keywords and groups them into broad topic pages and supporting pages. It ranks its suggestions using relevance, search volume, a ranking-difficulty estimate, the variety among the ranking websites and search-result features. Those features are the extras Google adds to its results page. You need a paid SEO Toolkit subscription to use it.2
The output is a plan, not a decision. Before you build a page, search the keyword in Australia and see what ranks. If the results are service pages, a guide will struggle. If they are guides, a service page may not fit. Our AI SEO agency makes this call for each page we plan, so each question has one page that answers it.
Which tools help improve an existing article?
These tools find gaps in what your page covers. You then fill the gaps with your own evidence. Ahrefs’ AI Content Helper gives a draft a score from 0 to 100 for how well it covers the main topics for a keyword. It also lets you compare your draft with the pages that rank highest.4 Ahrefs says stuffing in keywords won’t raise that score. Most Ahrefs plans, including Free, include one new AI Content Helper document a month. Enterprise plans include five documents and extra ones are paid add-ons.4
Surfer’s Content Editor offers topic suggestions, an outline builder, an AI writing assistant and an internal linking feature. That feature scans your site and adds links between your pages automatically.6 Check every automatic link before publishing, because a link in the wrong place can mislead a reader.
Neither score is a Google ranking. Google advises writing content yourself from what you know about the topic.11 It says generative AI, meaning AI that writes text, can be useful for researching a topic and adding structure to your own original content. It warns that producing lots of pages without adding value for users may break its spam policy on scaled content abuse.10 It also advises checking AI-written content by hand for accuracy before you publish.10
Kavera note: A tool can show which topics your competitors cover but it can’t supply your evidence. Our ChatGPT SEO guide rests on screenshots we captured of our client SHORE’s results and a clear statement of what they do not prove. No editing tool produces that.
Which tools can check your website?
A crawler is software that visits your pages automatically and lists what it finds. Each run is called a crawl. Screaming Frog’s SEO Spider is a crawler that can also put your own AI questions to the page details it collects, through connections to OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic and Ollama.8
For example, you could ask for a summary of every page title or a check of whether a page answers its heading. To use OpenAI, Gemini or Anthropic you need an access key from that company, called an API key. The company charges depending on your account and how much you use. Screaming Frog also documents a limited Gemini free tier in eligible regions. Ollama can run models on your own computer without a key from a provider.8 The SEO Spider licence costs extra.9
The risk is trusting a fix the AI suggested. Treat a suggested web address change or page-code edit as something to test. Try it on one page and collect that page’s data again before you apply the change across the site.
Can SEO be done by AI?
Parts of it can, as long as a person is responsible for the result. AI tools shorten research, grouping, editing and checking. They can’t supply the thing that makes a page worth ranking, which is real work: your projects, your prices, your licence and the questions your customers ask.
Google says no tool made by another company can see inside its ranking or AI systems. It tells site owners to be wary of tools that promise ranking success.11 Use tools for the speed and keep the judgment.
How much will these tools cost a small business?
The cost depends on the plan, the billing term and the review time your team spends. The vendor pages are not always clear on currency. The table shows what each page displayed on 19 October 2026. None of these figures is a Kavera price.
Scroll across to read every column
| Tool | Entry price shown | Billing and currency note |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | No price stated on the page we read | Google’s own tool |
| Ahrefs | Check the live quote for Starter or Lite | Confirm currency and billing term. AI Content Helper includes one new document a month on these plans |
| Semrush SEO | Check the live quote for the SEO plan | Confirm currency and monthly or annual billing. The page lists five websites and 500 tracked keywords |
| Surfer | Discovery 49 USD/month, Standard 99 USD/month | Billed yearly with the full year paid upfront |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Free basic checks up to 500 page addresses. Paid licence GBP 199 per user per year | AI connections require the paid licence; model-provider charges or free-tier limits are separate |
The sources for the table are each vendor’s pricing page.5379 Convert to Australian dollars and add GST where it applies before you compare. Then add the model-provider charges, extra seats and the hours someone spends checking the output. A seat is one user.
For a small local business, a low-cost start is Search Console plus one site checker or one editor, chosen for the job you have. Skip the tools you won’t open twice.
Are there free AI SEO tools worth using?
A few vendors offer a free version. The limits decide whether it helps. Ahrefs lists a free plan with one new AI Content Helper document a month.54 Screaming Frog’s free version checks up to 500 page addresses. Its AI connections need the paid licence, so the free version is a basic site-check option and not a free AI pilot.9
Test the exact feature you plan to buy. Check its licence, usage limits and billing period before you subscribe.
What about tools for links, local search and rank tracking?
Two jobs are seeing which other websites link to yours and following where you sit in search results. For both, compare Ahrefs’ Site Explorer and Rank Tracker, which are listed in its paid plans.5 Check the linking pages yourself and note the location and update frequency behind any ranking figure. For local search, start with accurate Google Business Profile details and your service pages. Google Business Profile is your business’s listing on Google. Our local SEO service covers that work.
Rank trackers report where a page sits for a search. Treat the number as a sample, since position varies by place and person.
What return can you expect from an AI SEO tool?
None of the vendor pages we read gives an independent return figure. We don’t have one either. Judge a tool by the time it saves and the suggestions you accepted. Then look at enquiries from the page over a fixed period. Don’t borrow another business’s result as your target.
What should you test before relying on a tool?
Run a one-page pilot and judge the result, not the demo. Choose one live page that matters, such as your main service page. Then follow these steps.
- Record the page’s current clicks and impressions from Search Console.
- Run the tool and list every suggestion it makes.
- Mark each suggestion as true, false or unknown. Check unknowns against a source.
- Apply only the accepted changes and note how long the whole process took.
- Review the page in Search Console after four weeks, using an equal period. Record what moved.
The pilot tells you whether the tool saves time and whether its output was accurate enough to trust. It doesn’t prove the tool raised rankings, because other changes can move results too.
Do you need SEO tools or AI visibility tracking?
If you want to do SEO work, you need SEO tools. If you want to know whether ChatGPT or Google’s AI features mention your business, you need tracking. They answer different questions.
Kavera note: Our Sydney trades index used 50 fixed questions. We saved 197 completed answers from 200 planned checks, each one a question put to one AI engine. Recording an answer and improving a page are separate jobs. Keep a record of each so you can tell what you measured from what you changed.
The fine print
- What we didn’t test. We haven’t tested how easy any of these tools is to use, so we can’t rank them on that.
- How current the details are. Prices, limits and features are what each vendor’s page displayed on 19 October 2026. Check the live page for the current plan, currency and billing term before you buy.

Good questions
Common questions Clear answers
Which AI tools can help me find keywords and plan content?
Semrush’s Keyword Strategy Builder takes up to 10,000 keywords and groups them into broad topic pages and supporting pages. It needs a paid SEO Toolkit plan. Ahrefs and Surfer suggest topics to cover in a draft. Start with the questions in your own Search Console data, then use a tool to organise them. Check each suggestion against what Australian customers actually ask.
Can AI tools audit my website and suggest technical SEO fixes?
Yes, in part. Screaming Frog’s SEO Spider visits your pages automatically and lists what it finds, which is called a crawl. Its paid version can run AI questions over that page data through connections to AI providers. Read the findings yourself and test any suggested website change on a copy before you publish it.
Which tools are easiest for a small business to use?
We haven’t tested these products, so we can’t rank them on ease of use. Google Search Console is the sensible first step because it shows your own search data. Add one paid tool only when a specific job justifies it and run a one-page pilot first. Choose the tool whose output you can check without specialist knowledge.
Can AI tools update my website content or do I need to do that myself?
A tool can draft text or suggest edits. A person who knows your business must check the facts, prices, licences and claims before anything is published. Google advises checking AI-written content by hand for accuracy before it goes live. Treat tool output as a first draft, then add your own projects and evidence.
How accurate are AI-generated SEO recommendations?
Accuracy varies. Content scores are vendor measures, not Google rankings. Google says generative models predict a likely sequence of words, so their output can contain errors. Check any search volume, ranking or technical claim against Search Console or a site check. Keep a record of which suggestions you accepted and what changed.
Can SEO be done by AI alone?
Not responsibly. AI tools speed up research, planning, editing and checking. The proof that makes a page worth ranking comes from real work such as projects, prices, licences and customer questions. Google also warns that producing many pages without adding value for users may break its spam policy, so a person still decides what gets published.
