Perplexity SEO: how to help customers find and check your business
The quick answer
Perplexity SEO means helping Perplexity find, read and describe your business correctly. Start with a clear page for each service and correct public details. Check that Perplexity’s page reader can get into your site. Then ask it your customers’ questions, open the source links and count being named separately from being linked to your own website.

Key takeaways
- Perplexity SEO has two meanings: getting your business into Perplexity’s answers or using Perplexity to research SEO. This guide covers the first.
- PerplexityBot finds pages for Perplexity’s search and follows your site’s robots.txt file. Perplexity-User visits a page when a person asks for it and generally ignores that file.
- The Perplexity pages we read don’t give a ranking formula, don’t require special code labels for citations and don’t promise when a page will be cited.
- In our Sydney trades study Perplexity linked a directory in 14 of its 50 completed answers, so check your listings as well as your site.
- Open every source link and check that it supports your business, your service and your place.
Perplexity is an AI search tool. You ask it a question and it writes a short answer with numbered links beside it, so you can see which pages the answer came from.2 Perplexity SEO means making sure it can read your website and that what it says about your business is right. You can’t know what it says about you without asking, so the first job is to ask it.
Here’s an example. Say a customer in Parramatta asks Perplexity for a plumber who fixes in-wall cisterns. It writes a short answer with numbered links beside it. Either your business is in that answer or it isn’t, which you can’t tell without asking.
Perplexity SEO starts with the information a customer needs before calling you. Our AI SEO agency helps Australian businesses improve that information. This guide shows how to check page access, choose a service page to improve and inspect the source links beside your business. Getting your business into answers like this is called generative engine optimisation (GEO). Our guide on what is GEO explains it. Perplexity is one of the AI answer engines that GEO covers.
What does this mean for your business?
You can’t predict which pages Perplexity will cite. You can check what it says about you and fix what it works from. Here is where to start:
- Ask Perplexity a question your customer would ask, with the job and your suburb in it. Save the answer and the numbered sources.
- Open each source link and check that it supports your business, your service and your place.
- If your site isn’t among the sources, check that Perplexity’s page reader can get in. Then improve the page that answers that job.
- Each month, repeat the same questions and count four things separately: the times your business is named, the times your site is linked, visits and enquiries.
What does Perplexity SEO mean for a business?
Perplexity SEO is work on your website and public information so that Perplexity can find, understand and cite your business. It is not the same as asking Perplexity to draft an SEO plan, which is a different job with a different guide.
Definition: A mention is Perplexity naming your business in its answer text. A citation is a numbered link to one of your pages. A source is any page Perplexity links, including directories and other people’s sites. You can have a mention without a citation or a citation without a mention.
Perplexity says it searches the web in real time and links to sources.2 The help page describes this process only in general terms. It does not give a formula for predicting which business page will be cited for a particular question.
Can Perplexity reach your important pages?
Start by checking that Perplexity’s automated visitors can read your important pages. Its documentation separates the visitors that find pages for search from the visits a user asks for.1 A successful check shows that Perplexity can reach a page. It doesn’t show that the page will be chosen as a source.
A crawler is a program that reads web pages automatically. A small public file called robots.txt tells those programs which parts of a site they may read. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in that file if you want your site to appear in its search results.1
Scroll across to read every column
| Visitor | What it does | Follows the site’s robots.txt file? |
|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results | Yes. Perplexity recommends allowing it |
| Perplexity-User | Visits a page when a person asks about it | Generally ignores it, since a person requested the visit |
Perplexity says PerplexityBot finds and links websites for its search results. It does not collect content for training AI foundation models.1 Perplexity-User visits a page in response to a person’s request. Because a person asked for that visit, Perplexity says this visitor generally ignores the robots.txt file.1
Even when robots.txt lets PerplexityBot in, a security filter on your website can still block it. That filter is called a web application firewall. Perplexity recommends identifying legitimate visitors with both their names and the network addresses it currently publishes before you allow them through the firewall.1 Perplexity’s roughly 24-hour timing is about changes to robots.txt settings. For firewall changes it advises monitoring your access logs and doesn’t promise a fixed delay.1
You don’t need to do this yourself. Send your web developer this request:
Please check that PerplexityBot can read our public service and contact pages. Confirm our robots.txt file and hosting security allow legitimate requests. Identify the visitor using both its declared name and Perplexity’s current published network addresses. Do not switch off security for all traffic. Tell me what you changed and the date.
Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt covers the other visitors and the choices behind them.
Which pages should you improve first?
Improve the pages for the jobs you want enquiries from, with one page for each service. Each page should answer the question a customer asks Perplexity, in the words they use.
Here’s an example. Say you’re a Sydney electrician. Your switchboard upgrade page would say what the job involves, which suburbs you work in, how a customer asks for a quote and what information you need first. It works because it answers one request completely.
Check each service page against this list:
- It names the service and the area in plain words.
- It says who does the work and how to reach them.
- It shows real project details, not general claims.
- It states prices only where you are happy to publish them.
- It is up to date. The same facts appear on your listings.
Perplexity does describe how it labels some sources. Its review of a whole website looks at questions such as whether the site corrects its mistakes, names who wrote each piece and separates news from advertising and opinion.3 That review sets labels such as Government, Academic and Trusted. Perplexity says its business arrangements do not affect a label.3 Those are good habits for any site. A label is not a ranking rule and we can’t say it changes your citations.
Which sites does Perplexity link to for Sydney trades?
In our Sydney trades study, Perplexity linked more directories and fewer government pages than ChatGPT did. A directory is a website that lists many businesses in one place. So a local business should check its directory profiles as well as its own site.
We asked 50 questions about 10 Sydney trades and saved the full answers and links. Perplexity completed all 50. The table shows how many of its answers linked each type of source, with ChatGPT beside it for comparison. One answer can link several source types, so the columns do not add to 100%.
Scroll across to read every column
| Source type | Perplexity: answers linking it / completed | ChatGPT: answers linking it / completed |
|---|---|---|
| Directory | 14 / 50 | 8 / 50 |
| Editorial list or guide | 4 / 50 | 0 / 50 |
| Government | 1 / 50 | 34 / 50 |
| Review platform | 0 / 50 | 4 / 50 |
| Other or business website | 49 / 50 | 50 / 50 |
In Perplexity’s 50 answers, hipages.com.au appeared in 12 and thequoteyard.com.au in 4. Perplexity also linked to the named business’s own website in at least 182 of its 240 business name appearances. For 53 more we couldn’t match the link to a destination, so the true number may be higher.
Kavera note: These are observed links, not a list of sites to join. We did not test whether getting listed anywhere changes an answer. The full records, including the question set, are in our Sydney trades AI search index.
The picture below shows the two biggest gaps. Perplexity linked a directory in 14 of its 50 answers against 8 of 50 for ChatGPT. It linked a government page in 1 of 50 against 34 of 50 for ChatGPT.

How do you check the sources Perplexity shows for your business?
Open every source link beside your business and check that it supports what the answer says. A citation is only useful if the page behind it is accurate, current and about the right business.
- Ask the customer question in a fresh Perplexity thread. Put the job and the suburb in it.
- Save the whole answer, the date and the numbered sources.
- Note whether your business is named. Note whether your website is one of the sources.
- Open each source. Does it support the claim next to it? Does it mention your service and your area?
- Check the place. Is the answer about your city?
- Record anything wrong in a sheet, with the source page that caused it.
Kavera note: The place check matters. In our study Perplexity read a Canterbury lock-change question as Canterbury in England, because the question we used didn’t name Sydney. We kept that answer as an answer about the wrong place and did not count it as a Sydney locksmith being absent. Always put your suburb or city in the question.
Be careful when a citation is missing. If a directory is cited instead of your site, the fix may be your directory profile and not your own pages.
What should you do when information is wrong or outdated?
Correct the page the answer came from and not the answer itself. Open the source link next to the wrong detail, find where it lives and update it through that site’s normal process.
If the source is your own website, correct the page and keep the facts consistent across your listings. If it is a directory, update your profile or ask the owner to. For an outdated page, decide whether to update it or send visitors to a current replacement. Ask your developer to check where the old address sends people. Then repeat the same question later.
The Perplexity pages we read give no timetable for corrected information to appear in answers. Its guidance gives up to 24 hours for changes to the robots.txt file and not for a new answer.1 Keep a note of the correction date and check later answers before you decide whether the change has been picked up.
How do you measure whether a change helped?
Save the same questions each month and compare mentions, citations, visits and enquiries as four separate counts. Only checks done in Perplexity can support a claim about Perplexity.
Our guide to AI visibility tracking gives the sheet and the formulas. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 shows how to find visits from assistants such as Perplexity in Google Analytics.
Kavera note: Our SHORE example is a ChatGPT result and not a Perplexity one. In two checks about two months apart, our client SHORE went from absent to first in one Sydney builder shortlist (see our ChatGPT SEO guide). We have no equivalent Perplexity result to show, so we don’t claim one.
Which Perplexity SEO claims should you question?
Question any claim that gives a fixed number. We found none of these in the Perplexity pages we read, so treat them as opinion until a source shows otherwise.
Scroll across to read every column
| Claim you may see | What we found |
|---|---|
| A page must be refreshed every set number of days | No update schedule in the Perplexity pages we read |
| Special code labels are required to be cited | The cited access guidance does not state that requirement |
| Pages are cited within a set number of days | No timetable published. Settings changes may take up to 24 hours |
| A published list of ranking factors | Perplexity’s help describes sources only as top-tier and authoritative |
Perplexity’s access guidance explains automated visitors, their declared names and the security rules that can admit or block them.1 Its help page describes source selection in general terms.2 The pages cited here do not establish exact ranking weights. Ask for the original provider source before you rely on such a claim.
Some agencies advertise Perplexity optimisation as a separate service. For a local business the sound approach is to fix the underlying information once. It then serves every engine. Our guide to AI search engines in Australia covers where Perplexity sits.
The fine print
The 50 questions in our Sydney trades study were frozen, which means we fixed their wording and used it for every tool. We asked them on 16 and 17 October 2026. This is a convenience sample of Sydney trades from one run. Answers can change.
What should you do next?
Ask Perplexity one customer question for your best-paying job and your suburb today. Save the answer and open each source. If your site is not among them, check access first and then the page that answers that job.
Our SEO audit is free. Implementation is separate unless retained. See the SEO packages for terms. Monthly plans start at Suburb SEO, $890/month + GST. If you want a team to fix the information behind the answers, talk to our AI SEO agency. No SEO package guarantees rankings, leads or revenue.
Good questions
Common questions Clear answers
How do I check whether Perplexity recommends my business when someone searches for services in my suburb?
Write the question a customer would ask, with the job and your suburb in it. Ask it in a new Perplexity thread, then save the whole answer and the numbered sources. Note whether your business is named and whether your website is linked. Repeat the same question each month so you can compare like with like.
What makes Perplexity cite another business’s website rather than mine?
The Perplexity pages we read don’t give a formula that explains why it picked one source over another. Open the page it cited and compare it with yours. Does it answer the customer’s job and place, give useful detail and state current facts? Use that comparison to find gaps in your page. It isn’t proof of a ranking factor.
Which pages on my website should I improve first to help Perplexity find useful information about my business?
Start with the pages for the jobs that bring you enquiries, one page per service, then your contact and service-area pages. Say what you do, where you work, how a customer asks for a quote and any prices you are comfortable publishing. Add real project details. A page that answers a customer’s question plainly is the best starting point.
Do customer reviews and mentions on other websites affect whether Perplexity recommends my business?
Perplexity does not say how it weighs reviews or outside mentions, so we can’t claim an effect. We can see that in our Sydney study Perplexity linked directories in 14 of 50 answers. That makes your directory and review profiles worth keeping accurate, since customers can open them from an answer.
How do I find and correct outdated information about my business in Perplexity answers?
Open the source link beside the outdated detail and find where the wrong information lives. Correct it at that source, whether it is your site, a directory or a profile, using its normal update process. Then repeat the same question later. Perplexity does not publish a re-check timetable, so don’t expect an instant change.
How can I track whether visitors from Perplexity turn into enquiries?
Look for Perplexity in the report in your website analytics that shows where visitors came from. Then count the enquiries from those visits by recording each form submission as an event. Expect small numbers on a local site and read the counts before any percentage. Visits only show people who clicked, so keep a separate record of answers that named your business without a link.
Is Perplexity good for SEO?
It depends which meaning you intend. As a place where your customers may find businesses, it is worth checking for your trade and area. As a research assistant for SEO work, it can speed up questions but needs fact checks. This guide covers the first meaning, which is making sure Perplexity can reach, understand and cite your business.
